YOUTH PROFILES

Aye Htoo

Age 18 || Burma

 

Aye Htoo grew up in a refugee camp in Thailand and resettled to the USA in 2010. Although Aye Htoo had never played soccer before when she arrived, she became the most consistent participant in SWB, having a 98% attendance rate. In 2014 she graduated from high school and is now pursuing an advanced degree at a community college in Oakland.

Abednego Juarez

Age 19 || Guatemala

 

Abednego Juarez grew up in rural Guatemala speaking the Mayan dialect Kiche and Spanish. His family moved to the USA to find safety from increasing drug violence in his region and discrimination. Abednego, a two year captain in SWB, received a full scholarship to attend San Francisco State University. Learn more about his story here

Soccer Without Borders USA uses soccer as a vehicle for positive change, providing newcomer refugee, asylee, and immigrant youth with a toolkit to overcome obstacles to growth, inclusion, and personal success.
