SWB Uganda Partnering with Premier Skills for Goal 5 Summit

Soccer Without Borders Uganda is excited to partner with Premier Skills, the Premier League, and the British Council Uganda to host a Global Goal 5 Summit from October 17-23, 2021. The summit will be held at the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) Technical Centre in Njeru, Uganda, and is also being supported by Laureus Sport for Good.

The Global Goal 5 Summit is a direct result of the success of the East Africa Goal 5 Accelerator, which took place in early 2020. The Global Goal 5 Accelerator advances gender equality on the pitch, on the sidelines, in organizations, and in the media. Created in partnership with Common Goal and Women Win, each accelerator brings together a cohort of sport-for-development organizations and coaches to build girls’ participation, advance pipelines and pathways for female coaches, elevate female leaders, and change perceptions in our communities. Together, these actions contribute toward the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 which is to "Advance Gender Equality and Empower All Women and Girls."

The upcoming Goal 5 Summit will welcome 40 female coaches from 17 football-for-good organizations and football academics, representing 10 different districts in Uganda and five refugee settlements. The five-day residential program will feature the Premier Skills Introduction to Community Coaching Course facilitated by six Ugandan coaches. In addition to the coaching course, participants will enjoy team-building activities, discussions, and learning youth development best-practices from Soccer Without Borders coaches. Summit participants will learn best-practices for coaching girls and growing the game at the community level that they can bring back to their own organizations.

Soccer Without Borders Uganda is proud that 50% of its participants identify as girls, despite just 3% of football players in the African Confederation identifying as female. Through SWB’s efforts towards Global Goal 5, girls are given the opportunity to understand their bodies as athletes, build their confidence and voice as leaders, and access a community of supportive peers and mentors.
