Women's Sports Corps
Advancing Gender Equity Through Sport
"During my year in Uganda, I learned more about life and loving others than I did throughout my entire four years in college. Realizing that there are so many things that are bigger than myself, has been one of the most important lessons of my life. Once seen in action, you will never forget what the power of sport for development can do within a community."
— Amy Howard (WSC Fellow at SWB Uganda, 2013-14)
Women’s Sports Corps is a joint venture between Women Win, a global leader in gender equity through sport and Soccer Without Borders, which uses soccer as a vehicle for positive change, providing under-served youth with a toolkit to overcome obstacles to growth, inclusion, and personal success. Women's Sports Corps is an adaptation and expansion of the former Soccer Without Borders "Team Leader" Program.
What is Women's Sports Corps?
Women's Sports Corps Fellows play a vital role in the growth and expansion of girls programming as well as the operation and implementation of all aspects of sports-based international development with their host organizations. On a daily basis, WSC Fellows are learning, teaching, and creating much-needed opportunities for young people to play and learn in a team environment. The universal language of soccer provides the perfect platform for youth and community engagement, forging meaningful cross-cultural relationships and authentic collaboration with local stakeholders.
Women's Sports Corps Fellows' responsibilities are a full-time commitment to coaching and mentoring youth, promoting gender empowerment, developing and facilitating programming, and immersing oneself in a new culture for 10-12 months. Through Women's Sports Corps, fellows have the opportunity to make a deep and lasting impact in their host community, alongside local women and girls, while honing professional skills and exploring their passions. The Women's Sports Corps Fellowship experience is great preparation for a wide range of career paths, including sports-based youth development, social work, coaching, community development, public health, medicine, education, and more.
