Soccer Without Borders (SWB, locally Fútbol Sin Fronteras) has been selected as a Featured Grantee of Together Women Rise in support of the SWB Nicaragua Education & Leadership Program (ELP). This grant from Together Women Rise will play an instrumental role in helping the ELP fulfill its mission to facilitate positive school outcomes through a system of financial, academic, and socio-emotional support that empowers girls to overcome barriers to success.
Together Women Rise is a non-profit organization consisting of a community of women and allies dedicated to achieving global gender equality. SWB is honored to partner with such a powerful community, consisting of hundred of chapters across the United States, who stand united in the belief that "gender equality is achievable, and that determined women together in community can achieve anything."
In Granada, the operating location of SWB Nicaragua, there many factors which may cause a girl to drop out of school, including domestic responsibilities in the home, a financial need to work in the market/informal economy, unplanned pregnancy, and a lack of visible pathways and encouragement for women to enter the workforce and pursue a career.
At SWB Nicaragua, sport and education go hand-in-hand. SWB coaches motivate school
engagement through check-ins, tutoring, and homework help, recognition and reward for school attendance and good grades, peer and mentoring support, and a positive, future-focused culture that asks girls to “dream big” and imagine their future.
"Since my daughter joined Soccer Without Borders," participant parent Taymara Guerrero Sotelo explains, "she has experienced significant changes in her life to the point that the teacher at her school comments that she has become more sure of herself, social, and participatory in class. I thank Soccer Without Borders because it’s the only organization working with girls that creates a safe space where they can raise their voices."
The funding provided Together Women Rise will allow SWB to invest in the growth of the ELP which aims to enroll more than 275 girls in the SWB Nicaragua program in 2022 providing over 100 school scholarships, and enroll more than 300 girls in 2023, providing over 130 school scholarships.
