Youth Leadership & Empowerment

Since 2005 we have worked with over 60,000 newcomer youth and today, we have a staff of 30% program alumni. SWB understands that the journey of a refugee or a new immigrant comes with unique challenges that require learning immediate survival skills such as mastering English and trying to make new friends in order to keep mental health challenges that come with isolation, at bay.

The SWB Approach

Since 2005 we have worked with over 60,000 newcomer youth and today, we have a staff of 30% program alumni. SWB understands that the journey of a refugee or a new immigrant comes with unique challenges that require learning immediate survival skills such as mastering English and trying to make new friends in order to keep mental health challenges that come with isolation, at bay.

SWB youth are greeted with not only opportunities to receive academic supports and build friendships made on the soccer field, they also get socio-emotional learning skills development such as teamwork, sportsmanship, effective communications and respect and workforce development and youth leadership opportunities through refereeing soccer games, coaching younger SWB participants and coordinating and operating community soccer leagues.

In 2025 our youth leaders embarked on various leadership journeys that include participatory co-design of various programs for SWB including soccer leagues, academic and behavioral health curriculum that improve and allow our services to be grounded in youth voice.

Skills for Life

Through teamwork, communication, and sportsmanship, youth develop social and emotional skills that support their well-being

and future success.

SWB is creating systems change by ensuring our youth are provided with leadership opportunities that give genuine voice to issues they care about in their communities.
